I did a search to see if there were bible in a year plans available in RSS format, and there are. Subscribe to a feed and have your bible reading for the day delivered to your favorite RSS reader.

The ESV has about 10 different reading plans available in RSS.

Seminary Style Manual and Software

So, if you have looked at the Seminary Style manual, it’s huge. I remember trying to wade through it to figure out all of the requirements when I wrote a paper for an online class last spring. I was looking for a summary page or a bulleted list that would just tell me what I needed to do, or a word template, but wasn’t having luck finding it without reading a WHOLE lot.

The style manual is available online on ecampus under Help Desk –> Policies and Guidelines. (You must have a login to view it)

The bookstore has some software that will do most of the formatting for you called StyleEase. When I was there earlier this week, I discovered that they were out of the disks. However, there is a website for the software, with demo versions available to download. It’s also $5 cheaper to buy the software online then it was to buy it in the bookstore. I almost sat down with Word 2007 to try to put a template together, but I’m glad I don’t need to.

If there are any free resources out there that will make the formatting easy, let me know, otherwise, I’ll be getting Style Ease.

What to look for in a webhost

I’ve had a couple of different people ask me about what to look for in web hosting over the last couple of days. For anyone else who might be interested, here is the list.

Things to look for:

Price
Customer support – will you get a human? What are their hours?
Uptime – how often do their servers go down?
What is their administrative interface – Cpanel is a nice way to go
Number of email accounts you can have
Number of domains you can have, cost of domain if you purchase it from your host
Number of subdomains (ie… I have my sites on 3 subdomains, music.julie-h.com, blog.julie-h.com, portfolio.julie-h.com. The subdomain is that first part instead of www.)
Do they have a Statistics package so you can monitor traffic on the server?
Do they have any scripts built in that you can choose to install?
Number of MySQL databases (a lot of pre-installed scripts each need a database)
Technologies supported – not every server will let you do .asp, or .php, or Frontpage extensions, etc.
Bandwidth – Are you planning on using many audio or video files? You will need a large amount of bandwidth for users to download your video and audio
Streaming – Does the site allow you to stream audio and video files, if you will be using alot of those? This means people can start watching the media before it’s finished downloading

NET bible for Java Cell Phones

My husband and I just combined cell phone plans, and I’ve been searching for free applications for our KRZR K1′s. My favorite new app is probably the NET bible for my cell phone. I’ve owned a version of this translation for a couple of years, and it’s really nice on a 20 minute bus ride to be able to pull out my cell and read the bible. If you have a java enabled cell phone, you can download the program for free.

Safari for Windows

Yes, that’s right, I recently discovered that apple has released a PC version of the Safari internet browser. It looks like it was launched in June. Perhaps motivated by being able to import your browser favorites into the iPhone???

If you’d like to download Safari for the PC, you can go to apple’s website.

I’ve looked at it, and I must say, it’s not bad, but IMHO Firefox is still the best PC browser.
