Quick Life Update:
I’ve been full speed ahead to get my MDIV done in 3 yrs, and it’s been going really well. I’ve made great progress, I will be 2/3 of the way done at the end of the semester.

Last Monday, I went to register for winter and spring classes, very exciting. I had my schedule all lined up - it was going to be great.

Then I went to apply for student loans. After 4 & 6 percent interest rates on our previous loans - they quoted me a 12% interest rate. Seriously?!?!?!?! After a call to the loan company, my husband and I were told it was nothing in our profile specifically, but that underwriting has changed, and rates are going up across the boards.

At first, I was pretty upset - freaking out - then I was just generally grumpy. I played through lots of scenarios in my head, stressing myself out as I went.

Things look brighter now. I’m admittedly still not loving the idea of taking an extra year to get through grad school, but I am seeing a couple of blessings in this - significantly less debt when I’m done with school, and another year serving at and doing life with the people I love at our church. Looking around me, I have a Savior who loves me, a wonderful marriage, a nice place to live, heat, food, and money to pay the bills. God has been so faithful in providing. His plans are always better than mine.

For now- (holding this with open hands) - I will probably take an additional year to get through school, and work a lot more in order to pay as I go. I will take only Monday classes next semester, and maybe one internet course. I would like to keep my job at Gymboree Play & Music, and I’ve applied to substitute teach. Hopefully that can be my second job.

That’s my update.
Peace out!

I was tagged for a reading days Meme. Here goes. If you are reading this and want to participate, leave a comment, and consider yourself tagged!

1. What are you reading on Spring reading days?
I don’t know what I’ll read in the spring. This fall, I’m actually all caught up on my reading… I’m catching up on tasks. Such as:

restringing my guitar

cleaning up files on my desktop and our laptop

reformatting a hard drive and setting up daily backups from two of our computers to that drive

adding a task plugin to my google calendar

re-recording a vocal track for a song I wrote that will be on our church’s next CD release

Watching a YouTube video on barre chords

Watching all of the messages from the latest Desiring God conference.

Studying Greek - particularly vocab

Writing a couple of papers.

Reading way too many blogs

2. What do you wish you had time to read?
Um… actually… I’m okay spending time practicing and getting other things done. There are lots of things I want to read at some point, but nothing I am longing to read NOW.

3. What have you decided NOT to read that you were assigned to read.
Nothing, actually I’ve been doing some extra reading. (yes, I’m crazy, I know. ) Dr. Ware recommended Ladd’s NT Theology and John Bright’s book on Kindgom Theology if you are working through issues related to dispensationalism/covenant theology. I’ve been reading both of those (slowly). I’m also trying to look into Kingdom Theology, and do some research on the Holy Spirit’s role in Worship. I did finish Breakthrough by Derek Morphew this semester, as well.

4. What is one great quote from your reading?

“In Jesus Christ and through the Pentecostal outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the end broke into the present. The powers of the age to come - the future, universal rule of God - invaded our world. The result is that the church now lives between times in a unique dimension where the fallenness of this world and the glory of the future kingdom co-exist. The implications of this can best be understood if we work from the future towards the present. In the final consummation of the kingdom all sickness will be banished. This was the promise of Isaiah. God will wipe away every tear and there will be no more death or mourning, crying or pain (Revelation 21:3-4). Nothing impure or shameful will be allowed in this kingdom. This settles a question sick people often agonise over: Is it God’s will to heal me? The answer is that when God rules supreme, there will be no sickness. Sickness can never be a part of his will. To suggest that is so dishonours the character of God. The devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy. God comes to give life.

In Jesus the future rule of God broke into the present. The presence of Jesus brought the presence of God’s perfect will. When people said to Jesus, ‘If you are willing, you can make me clean.’ Jesus replied: ‘I am willing; be cleansed’ (Mark 1:41). Wherever Jesus went, healing followed, because wherever Jesus went, God’s will broke through. Jesus is what God had to say about himself. Watch the deeds of Jesus and see the will of God.

When the Holy Spirit was poured out, the powers of the age to come broke through. The result was the gifts of healing were seen. The presence of the Holy Spirit is synonymous with the perfect rule of God, which is synonymous with healing. When a person is healed it means that the power of the future kingdom has broken through into the present. Every healing is a kingdom breakthrough.

Why are some people not healed? This is because the kingdom has broken through but has not yet taken over. It is here, but in a provisional sense. The final takeover of the kingdom will occur at the second coming. Until then the present world continues. ” p.184, Breakthrough, Derek Morphew

5. Why are you blogging? (You’re supposed to be reading!)
It’s one more thing I can cross off of my things to do today.

Internet Monk has a thought provoking post about The Missing Voice of the Christian Counter-Culture. Here’s an excerpt:

Now as I’ve said before, I’m encouraged by how many contemporary artists and authors are personally involved in ministries of mercy and issues of compassion and significance. These are a generation of artists who are busy supporting International Justice Mission and Blood:Water Mission.

But few of them are raising the voice of a true Christian counter culture; few have the sound of counter culture protest, lament or outcry. Few are taking on the voice of the prophet. Few are using artistic irony and sharp observation and story telling to penetrate into those aspects of our culture where the truth of God has a sure and true word for us. Few are articulating the vision of anything approaching a radical kind of Christian discipleship.

I don’t hear the kids of voices that shined the light of God on the darkness of racism, that opposed the Vietnam war with a Christian conscience or that awoke to the realities of poverty and corruption in America. Evangelical art seems to reflect the concerns of the status quo, and the easy acceptance of a world where how we feel is the great crisis of our time.

As Christians, we are called to be salt and light. How can we better stand out from the culture - even be counter cultural - in the way we live our lives, in our worship, and in our artistry?

I don’t normally make posts on politics, but I will on this one. Ignore it if that’s not your thing.

It’s hitting the news today that Palin stated that we could possibly be headed for a great depression. What wasn’t stated is that Katie Couric, not Palin, made that suggestioin in a question this CBS News interview(see 3:08). Couric asked “If this doesn’t pass, do you think there’s a risk of another great depression?” Palin responded (paraphrasing here) unfortunately, it’s the road we may find ourselves on - not necessarily the bill as proposed needs to pass - but we do need to take bipartisan action and be serious about reforming wall street.

In a later interview with McCain (see 7:17), Couric took it out of context and made it a statement. Couric then accused the McCain campaign of using rhetoric to scare people (see 8:12).

For the record, the depression rhetoric was introduced by Couric.

Overall I think this is fairly well done. The onscreen text works well with the song. I’ve been doing some reading on the Kingdom of God, and this came up in a YouTube search. Enjoy!

PS - If you have any resources to recommend on the Kingdom of God and/or the Role of the Holy Spirit in Worship, leave a comment! I’d appreciate your suggestions.
