A couple of convicting quotes

August 17, 2007

Here are a couple of very good quotes, taken from Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, by Donald S. Whitney. It’s assigned reading for my Personal Spiritual Disciplines class.

Consider the people who will work hard at learning to play an instrument, knowing that it takes years to acquire the skills, who will practice hard to lower their golf score or to improve their sports performance, knowing it takes years to become proficient, who will discipline themselves throughout their career because the know it takes sacrifice to succeed. These same people will give up quickly when they find the Spiritual Disciplines don’t come easily, as though becoming like Jesus was not supposed to take much effort. (p.21)

Do you realize that tape-recorded readings of the Bible have proven that you can read through the Bible in seventy-one hours? The average person in the United States watches that much television in less than two weeks. In no more than fifteen minutes a day you can read through the Bible in less than a year’s time. Only five minutes a day takes you through the Bible in less than three years. And yet the majority of Christians never read the Bible all the way through in their whole life. So we’re back to the idea that it’s primarily a matter of discipline and motivation. (p.33)
